Staying Connected in Colombia

In Colombia, from cities to coffee fields to beaches, staying connected is not just convenient, it’s essential. Whether you’re sharing your adventures, navigating with maps, or contacting your guide, having reliable data makes your trip smoother. Today, travelers can choose between modern eSIMs and traditional SIM cards, and both options have their own advantages.

eSIMs are the easiest way to get connected before you even land. These are digital SIM cards that you can install on your phone. Providers like Airalo, Nomad, AloSIM, Holafly, and Jetpac offer flexible plans for Colombia, ranging from affordable short-term packages to unlimited data options. With an eSIM, you don’t need paperwork, you can add credit directly through an app, and you’ll be online the moment you arrive. Just remember to check the provider’s website first to make sure your phone is compatible with their app and service.

Physical SIM cards, on the other hand, give you access to local rates and services. The main Colombian providers are Claro, Movistar, and Tigo. To buy one, you’ll need to visit a shop with your passport, purchase the SIM for about €1–2, and select a prepaid data package (usually 2 GB for around €2 or 5 GB for €4). The process takes a little extra time, but you’ll benefit from cheaper data and the option to make local calls and send SMS.

Our tip: if you’re on a short trip and want maximum convenience, go for an eSIM. If you’re planning a longer stay or expect to use your phone extensively for local calls, a physical SIM may be the better choice. Either way, you’ll be able to stay connected and make the most of your Colombian adventure.
