Experiences at Finca La Jorará

Finca La Jorará, located between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Caribbean Sea in Palomino, offers experiences designed for travelers looking to engage with the local environment in an authentic way. Available activities include a guided tour of the farm’s banana plantations and a traditional mochila weaving workshop led by local artisans.

Below are the descriptions of each activity.

Banana Tour in La Jorará

In this experience, we step away from traditional tourist routes to enjoy something authentic, natural, and deeply connected to the land. We’ll discover the fruity soul of the Sierra Nevada through a journey that offers us biodiversity, unforgettable landscapes, and flavors that have accompanied the communities of the Colombian Caribbean for generations.

From the moment we begin walking the mountain trails overlooking the sea, we’re enveloped by the beauty of the tropical rainforest and the endless blue of the Caribbean Sea. We arrive at a special plantation that carefully cultivates more than 13 varieties of bananas and plantains, in harmony with nature and ancestral wisdom.

During the tour, we explore this true banana garden and get to know varieties such as apple banana, pink banana, guineo, four-angled plantain, serrano banana, Filipino banana, among others. We learn to distinguish their shapes, colors, textures, and flavors while discovering their multiple uses in cooking, natural medicine, and daily life.

The best part comes at the end: a delicious tasting of traditional recipes made with bananas and plantains. We try banana pancakes, banana cake, aborrajados (fried bananas with cheese), patacones (fried green plantains), banana chips, sweet banana coins, and the famous cayeye, a typical dish from our region.
Duration of the tour: 2.5 hours

Mochilas Workshop with Arhuaco family

Our experience begins with a natural drink made from organic, seasonal fruits to welcome us to this special cultural exchange gathering.

At the La Jorará facilities, members of the Arhuaco indigenous people from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta welcome us. They come to the farm to share their ancestral knowledge with us. Through a close and respectful dialogue, we will learn essential aspects of their worldview, the role of weaving in their culture, and the deep value of mochilas as a spiritual, symbolic, and everyday expression of their people.

From the farm, we begin a walk to one of the natural viewpoints. Surrounded by tropical rainforest and with views of the Caribbean Sea, we carry out the mochila workshop there, where the indigenous guides will take us step by step through the traditional process of making them—from the thread and its preparation to the weaving filled with intention and meaning.

During the gathering, we will also learn about the importance of other traditions, the traditional roles within the community, and the sacred connection between their daily lives and nature. There will also be an opportunity to buy authentic mochilas, woven by women of the community, available during the activity.

Once the workshop is over, we descend again to the main facilities of La Jorará. There, we can enjoy the natural surroundings: refreshing ourselves in the natural pools, relaxing in the hammocks or social areas, accessing the beach, or enjoying a meal at the restaurant.
An enriching, intimate, and mindful experience that connects us with the ancestral knowledge of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, from the heart of La Jorará.
