New Experiences in Cartagena

Cartagena continues to expand its range of cultural experiences, and at Kiubo Colombia Travel we're pleased to introduce two new products designed for travelers seeking a more hands-on connection with local traditions: the Zenu Weaving Workshop and the Drums Workshop.

Both workshops offer practical learning experiences led by local experts. In the weaving workshop, our clients are introduced to the ancestral craft of the Zenú people and have the opportunity to try traditional weaving techniques. The drums workshop introduces Afro-Caribbean rhythms and percussion—an essential part of the region’s musical heritage.

These activities take place in authentic settings and in small groups, allowing for close interaction with hosts and a deeper understanding of their knowledge and skills. They are ideal additions to itineraries focused on culture, sustainability, and community-based tourism.

Below you’ll find more details about each workshop.

Zenu Weaving Workshop

Today, we will immerse ourselves in the captivating world of Zenú Indigenous Heritage in Cartagena, a journey that offers a deep dive into Colombia’s vibrant cultural mosaic. Our exploration begins in the bustling 20 de Julio neighborhood, a lively enclave where the spirit and resilience of the Zenú people come to life.

At the Ninha workshop, we will meet inspiring Indigenous women leading a weaving project dedicated to preserving their endangered ancestral traditions. We will interact with these talented artisans as they share the fascinating history of the Zenú, their enduring struggles, and their remarkable resilience. We will learn the art of weaving with Caña Flecha, the primary material for their intricate crafts, and discover the symbolic meaning of the iconic Sombrero Vueltiao.
As part of this immersive experience, we will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on weaving workshop, trying this ancient craft under the guidance of skilled artisans. To enrich our cultural journey, we will enjoy a traditional corn and coconut drink, accompanied by a local snack, adding a delightful culinary touch to this exploration of Zenú heritage.
Duration: Approx. 2.5 hours
Includes: guide, private transportation, and Zenú weaving workshop.

Drums Workshop

We will begin this experience by delving into the heart of La Boquilla, a picturesque fishing village where the rhythms of Afro-Colombian culture pulse through everyday life. Here, the hypnotic sounds of drums echo through the streets, powerfully connecting the past with the present. A local guide will introduce us to the neighborhood, providing insights into its history and the role of music in cultural preservation. At a traditional music school, musicians and artisans specializing in drum-making will welcome us into their world, sharing the origins of Afro-Colombian rhythms and their significance in storytelling, identity, and resistance. We will learn the fundamentals of these powerful rhythms and be invited to participate in a live music session. We will also witness traditional dancers, immersing ourselves in the rich sound traditions that have shaped the Caribbean coast.
Beyond the music, our visit supports a valuable initiative that provides music education to the community’s children, ensuring that this cultural legacy remains alive. At the end of the session, we will return to Cartagena with a deeper connection to the sounds and resilience of Colombia’s Afro-Caribbean heritage.
Duration: Approx. 2 hours
Includes: Guide, private transport and percussion workshop with live performance.
