New Destination: San José del Guaviare

In February, our colleague Luisa had the opportunity to visit San José del Guaviare, a destination that, beyond its natural beauty, holds a fascinating story of transformation and resilience. This town, the capital of the Guaviare department, has witnessed significant changes over the years, transitioning from a conflict-ridden area to a thriving cultural and tourist destination in Colombia.

Once affected by armed conflict and illicit crops, San José del Guaviare has embraced sustainable tourism and crop substitution as a means to foster peace and development. Thanks to investments in infrastructure, security, and cultural promotion, it is now an attractive destination for travelers interested in adventure and history.

This destination stands out not only for its landscapes but also for its invaluable anthropological heritage. The region is home to remnants of ancient indigenous civilizations, reflected in rock paintings found throughout the territory. These artistic expressions, some dating back thousands of years, represent the worldview of native peoples and make Guaviare a key site for studying pre-Columbian history in the Americas.

Among the most impressive places Luisa visited in San José del Guaviare are:

  • Puentes Naturales: Rock formations that are named after their natural shape as enormous rock arches and are crossed by a small creek.
  • Puerta de Orión: A massive rock structure that appears to form a portal.
  • Cerro Azul and Nuevo Tolima: Archaeological sites where you can admire ancient rock paintings.
  • Laguna Negra and Pink Dolphins: A biodiverse ecosystem where you can spot wildlife, including pink river dolphins in their natural habitat and endemic bird species.
  • Raudal del Guayabero: A river canyon where the waters of the Guayabero River rush through rock formations, creating powerful rapids.

San José del Guaviare is a destination that amazes visitors, not only because of its natural richness but also due to its deep history and the resilience of its people in building a future of peace and development. If you're looking for a journey filled with adventure, learning, and a connection to history and nature, this is undoubtedly a place worth exploring.
