United Nations Climate Conference COP 16: A Historic Event in Colombia
The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is taking place for the first time this year in Colombia. From October 21 to November 1, 2024, COP 16 will bring together heads of state and government, climate researchers, activists, and representatives of civil society from around the world to discuss the most urgent climate issues of our time and to drive forward measures to combat climate change. COP 16 will be hosted in Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city.
Colombia, as you all know, is renowned for its impressive biodiversity and unique ecosystems, ranging from the Amazon lowlands to the high-altitude Páramo landscapes above 3,500 meters. Against this backdrop, it is the ideal venue for this conference. The choice of Colombia as the host country also highlights the role of the Global South in climate policy and emphasizes the need to center the voices of countries with rich biodiversity and climate vulnerability in international climate negotiations.
The core topics of COP 16 include adaptation to climate change, the protection of endangered ecosystems, the promotion of sustainable development goals, and the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. Colombia plans to showcase its national climate strategies at the conference, focusing on protecting the Amazon region, promoting renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
COP 16 offers Colombia the opportunity to present its efforts in combating climate change and its role as a regional leader. It is hoped that the conference will lead to significant progress in international climate policy and lay the foundation for a more sustainable and resilient future.
We are excited to welcome this important global conference to Colombia.
