New: Caoba Nature Reserve & Visit to a Cocoa Farm near Santa Marta
Our colleague Angelika, who lived in Santa Marta for a long time, recently explored the surrounding area and checked out a special tour we have long wanted to experience firsthand. The tour is diverse: cocoa, archaeology, tropical rainforest landscapes, nature conservation, biodiversity, and relaxed hiking. There's something for everyone.
The Caoba Farm, established by a German-Colombian couple, specializes in a large collection of various medicinal plants.
Here is a brief product description:
Full-day excursion to a cocoa farm and the Caoba nature reserve
On this tour, our first stop is a cocoa farm, which we cannot fully reach with our off-road vehicle. The jeep takes us to a certain point, from where we undertake a 30-minute hike (approx.) to the cocoa farm (difficulty level: low). Here we get to know the cocoa plantations up close and learn about the characteristics of cocoa as well as the complete process (drying, roasting, and grinding), from the harvested cocoa pod to the cup of hot chocolate. We will taste the freshly harvested cocoa and practically experience how chocolate is made. Those who wish can also enjoy a chocolate facial massage. Of course, we will also drink a freshly prepared cup of hot chocolate.
We then continue our tour to the Caoba biological reserve (a walk of about 5 minutes), which was founded in 2007 by a Colombian-German biologist couple. About 24 hectares of the property were completely reforested, and a large collection of various medicinal plants was established here. The owners are happy to share their knowledge with interested visitors. We will encounter a large labyrinth of medicinal plants, aquatic plants, and a variety of animals. The reserve is also located near an old indigenous settlement, where we can explore old stone paths, terraces, and houses of the indigenous Tayrona culture. Afterwards, we continue with the 4x4 vehicle to the Marinka waterfalls, where we can take a refreshing dip in the middle of nature. Finally, we return to our hotel.
