New Adventure Product in Putumayo, the "Gateway to the Amazon"

Those who have traveled to the Amazon lowlands usually return fascinated. So did we! Kiubo Colombia was recently exploring the southern part of Colombia, bordering our neighbor Ecuador. Here, we discovered the "Gateway to the Amazon." The department of Putumayo, with its capital Mocoa, is located at the foothills of the Andes, from where the great rivers flow towards the Amazon.

In this emerging tourist destination, we have developed a new adventure product for you. The diverse program includes not only a hike to one of Colombia's most impressive waterfalls, the "End of the World," but also ample interaction with the locals. The program can be conducted throughout the year. The tour guides are available in English and French.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact your Kiubo Colombia incoming manager directly.

Day 1: Putumayo - The gateway to the Amazon

Today marks the beginning of our journey southward in Colombia, to the department of Putumayo, which borders the neighboring country Ecuador. Upon our arrival at Puerto Asís airport, we will be welcomed by our local guide. We will kick off our adventure and head to the conservation area "Donde Se Oculta el Sol" in Villagarzón to closely observe the jungle's nature. After lunch, we'll take a tour of the natural reserve, learning about the tropical rainforest ecosystem and its inhabitants. We'll reach the Mohano waterfall, inviting for a swim and relaxation. After the visit, we'll be transferred to our hotel in Mocoa, the capital of Putumayo. Dinner will be served in Mocoa, allowing us to experience the gastronomy of the Amazon region.

Day 2: The "End of the World" waterfall

After breakfast, we'll explore "El fin del Mundo," a majestic waterfall amidst the tropical jungle. We embark on an exciting hike through the mountainous surroundings of Mocoa. The trail winds approximately 2 kilometers among rocks and trees, passing several waterfalls until we reach the "End of the World" waterfall, standing over 70 meters tall.

"The End of the World"

Following the hike, we'll enjoy a well-deserved picnic amidst nature, with time to refresh in the Dantayaco River's natural pools. We'll return to the natural park and head back to our hotel. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant in Mocoa.

Day 3: Visit to the cocoa cooperative "La Hormiga"

After breakfast, we'll head to the Valle del Guamuez, also known as "La Hormiga." Here, we'll visit a cocoa cooperative comprising various local farming families. After an initial tour of the cooperative, we'll enjoy lunch and learn about combining tourism projects with cocoa production. We'll explore cocoa crops and the different varieties of Putumayo, delving into topics like pests, flavors, aromas, and production capacities. At the end of the tour, we'll have time to converse with local workers about their working conditions and the cocoa plant process to chocolate bars. In the afternoon, we'll visit an ecotourism center on the outskirts of Puerto Asís, where we'll spend the night and enjoy dinner.

Day 4: Shared cooking with a local family

In the morning, following our travel itinerary, we'll have breakfast at the hotel and head to the Agrotourism Farm La Fortuna, located near the banks of the Putumayo River on the outskirts of Mocoa. There, we'll take a canoe tour, enjoying the landscape under the shade of trees and birdsong until we reach the home of our host, "Don Hernán." His family will welcome us, sharing their personal story. Together, we'll explore different techniques for preparing a typical lunch, participating and learning typical techniques like smoking plantain leaves, traditionally used to wrap various foods. We'll tour "Don Hernán's" farm, discovering various Amazonian fruits like açaí, copoazú, camú, and arazá. Finally, we'll arrive at a cabin in the middle of the forest, where we'll learn more about Don Hernán's life and his family's efforts, utilizing the cultivation of Amazonian fruits as a strategy to replace illegal crops like coca.
