New Product: Half-Day Tour to the Salt Mines of Nemocón

In the north of Bogota lie extensive salt deposits that were mined by the indigenous Muisca people long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Alongside emeralds, salt was known as white gold and was a crucial commodity for trade and barter. Today, large-scale salt mining continues in the northern region of Bogota, serving the food and chemical industries.

You are likely familiar with the famous Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, which we are happy to visit with your customers.

Now, we have another option in the same region that revolves around salt: a visit to the salt mines of Nemocón.

Underground "water mirror"

Here is our product description:

Today we leave Bogota and head to Nemocón, a mining town located about 50 km north of Bogota, which in the past became rich through the large local salt deposits. The salt mine is about 80 meters underground. We will traverse the tunnels, which in total span 1,600 meters in length and through which approximately 8 million tons of salt were extracted between the years 1816 and 1968. Many stalactites and stalagmites of the salt mine are moodily illuminated. We will learn a lot about the extraction of the "white gold" and will be surprised by the impressive optical effects, which are especially well displayed in the 28 "saltwater mirrors" in total. After the underground visit, we have the opportunity to explore the small authentic town with its picturesque main plaza before heading back to Bogota.
