Excursions and Activities on the Caribbean Island "Isla Mucura"
Today, we'd like to introduce you to two small activities that can be done from Isla Mucura, a destination often visited by our clients. Isla Mucura is approximately a two-hour speedboat ride from Cartagena, making it an ideal destination to spend the final days of a Colombia trip. We particularly recommend staying at Hotel Punta Faro or Hotel Isla Mucura.
Excursion to "Santa Cruz del Islote"
Santa Cruz del Islote is a tiny, man-made island in the Caribbean. Despite being only about the size of a football field, it is known as the most densely populated island in the world. Despite its small size, hundreds of people call it home, making it an extraordinary example of peaceful coexistence and interesting concepts of space optimization. The island began to form in the 1950s when local fishermen started anchoring their boats around a small coral island.

The tiny Santa Cruz del Islote Island
Over time, coral stones, rubble, and other materials were deposited there to gain additional land. Gradually, a solid base was formed, which was later expanded through concrete and brick construction. Today, Santa Cruz del Islote is a labyrinth of narrow streets and tightly packed houses. Visitors from the hotels on Isla Mucura can easily visit Santa Cruz del Islote on a short boat ride.
Phytoplankton Tour
Additionally, we have another interesting recommendation for you, which can be arranged by hotels on Isla Mucura. The Phytoplankton Tour, also known as the "Bioluminescence Tour," offers a unique experience where visitors have the opportunity to observe "glowing" phytoplankton up close in the Caribbean waters. After a short boat ride, visitors navigate the naturally formed channels of the neighboring island Tintipán, where the phytoplankton resides.
As visitors move through the water and night falls, the tiny organisms react to movement, creating a sparkling, bluish glow that is often perceived as magical. The tour is conducted daily at 6:30 PM and does not take place on full moon nights.
Both tours can be booked directly through the hotels on-site. Feel free to ask Christopher or your Kiubo incoming manager for more details.
