New Product in Medellin: Social Gastronomy in the Moravia Neighborhood
Today, we would like to introduce a new product that we are now offering in Medellin. During our latest inspection trip to Medellin in July 2023, we personally ensured that our mutual customers will absolutely love it.
This tourism product combines a guided tour of the once negatively perceived neighborhood of Moravia with direct interaction with locals and a "do-it-yourself" cooking project. The activity is especially suitable for small groups or individual travelers (FITs) with a maximum of 6 people. The product can also be customized for larger groups upon request.
Here's a brief description:
Project of Social Gastronomy in the Moravia Neighborhood
Today, we are visiting the Moravia neighborhood, located near the center of Medellín, for a half-day visit. The densely populated district was once a massive open-air urban landfill, where an informal settlement had formed. The residents, who were internally displaced due to the Colombian civil war, found themselves in Moravia, living in extreme poverty. However, in recent years, Moravia has undergone a positive transformation through various infrastructure projects. With a local guide, we will visit the "Cerro de Moravia," the Moravia Hill, and learn about the history and transformation of this once notorious neighborhood.
Following the tour of Moravia, we will get to know the social project called "Platos sin Fronteras" (Dishes without Borders), located at the foot of the Moravia Hill. Through this initiative, women living there learn to combine their traditional recipes with local and affordable ingredients, professional cooking techniques, and concepts of conscious and healthy eating. Together with these women, we will prepare a menu based on rich, nutritious, and local ingredients. While we chop and stir, we will learn more about the personal stories of the individuals involved in the project. This unique experience not only introduces us to new recipes but also allows us to actively contribute to the social and economic development of the people and their families involved in the project. At the end of today's excursion, we will enjoy the self-cooked lunch together. Buen provecho!
